Text as appearing on the Concert models, under the lid. Alternate text in in brackets [ ] appears on the Concerts, text in parenthesis ( ) appears on the botton of the Gems, and text in braces { } on the older pressure Gems DIRECTIONS({.}) The handle is attached to the instrument by screwing it upon the end of the crank, and is to be operated by turning it [(IN THE SAME DIRECTION)]{in the same direction}. [(When you wish to remove the handle, unscrew (it), holding the bellows crank, if necessary, so (that) it shall not revolve.)]{You may turn it the other way, if you want to: but then the handle will unscrew and come off into your hand. It is sometimes best to detach the handle and put it away, when not in use, to prevent the instrument from being meddled with.} The [cylinder]({roller}) has two holes in one end, and one in the other. Turn the two hole end toward the end of the instrument where the handle is, and place the central hole over the end of the driver shaft and the hole near the edge of the [cylinder]({roller}) over the pin in the driver arm. Draw back the spindle at the opposite end, by means of the brass button, and insert the end of it into the single hole in the [centre]({center}) of that end of the [cylinder] ({roller}). [TO PLAY:--]({Now play.}) Turn the handle just fast enough to play the tune properly. The [cylinder]({roller}) will revolve three times spirally, and when the tune is finished, it will [(automatically move)]{slip} back to place of beginning. If you wish to repeat the tune, keep right on turning the handle. ( Do not WRING or TWIST the Roller in removing it from the Instrument as by so doing you are liable to loosen the Driver arm.) There is a steel hook under the [cylinder]({roller}) shaft [(which holds)]{whose business it it to hold} the [cylinder]({roller}) up against the keys. But the instrument will play no tune without a [cylinder]({roller}); and if you have turned it without having one in {,} until the shaft is away from its place of beginning a tune, then press down the hook, let the shaft slip back, insert [a cylinder] ({your roller}), and turn away. The [{i}](I)nstrument will then play no music until it has got around to its place, when it will begin the tune. Keep the instrument in a dry place, away from the dust; [(fill the oiler with good sewing machine oil, and OIL THE WORKING PARTS OFTEN.)]{and oil the working parts occasionally with good oil, as you would a music box, or a sewing machine.} Patented{,} May{,} 31st, 1887.
